The Westweg in the German Black Forest was the preparation for Te Araroa.
We mainly wanted to test the equipment and get our bodies going.
The trail goes from Pforzheim to Basel through the entire Black Forest.
There are 2 variants: West variant and East variant.
We had decided to take the west variant.
In the north, the Westweg is part of the European long-distance hiking trail E1.
We already knew the Black Forest relatively well from our bike tours.
We love the area. The landscape is beautiful, the people are nice and the food is always good.
The trail is perfectly signposted and the quality is excellent.
You roam through forests, pass idyllic lakes and climb hills.
Often you have a good view towards the Rhine and Alsace.
You can sleep in hotels without leaving the trail, camping is also possible in principle.
The Feldberg is the highest point with 1'493m.
Actually not high, however, on the summit there is its own climate.
The average temperature over the whole year is 3.9 °C. Very cold for this altitude and latitude.
We were there in summer and it was really cold...
Hint: Do it in autumn, it can be very hot in summer (yeah, the Feldberg excluded)...
In addition to the Westweg there is also the Ostweg (no not the East variant ;-)), which leads from Pforzheim to Schaffhausen.
Certainly a cool tour, which would also interest us.
On the French side there is the possibility to cross the Vosges.
Longer than the Westweg and probably a bit more remote.
Definitely on our bucket list!
