The Canarian Islands are perfect for hiking during European winter.
The climate is pleasant. A lot of sun, but not hot. At higher altitudes the nights can be quite chilly.
We hiked through the four islands Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Teneriffa mainly on the GR131.
On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the trail leads mostly on gravel roads.
Actually it feels like walking on the moon with many volcanoes. The area is dry with very little green nature.
You walk through many beautiful little villages. The food is always great, and so is the wine.
The beaches on Fuerteventura are beautiful and the atlantic ocean very refreshing. And...
... from time to time you see nudist people, mostly not the prettiest...
Gran Canaria is also dry in the south, the further north you go it gets greener.
In the middle of the island there are some higher mountains with beautiful pine forests.
At the same time we were hiking through Gran Canaria, the TransGranCanaria took place.
An ultra marathon with the longest distance of more than 120 km and almost 7000 meters of altitude difference. Crazy!!
The most beautiful island from our point of view was Teneriffa. Very varied with many different forests.
At 3'715m, the Teide is the highest mountain in Spain.
Unfortunately we couldn't make the ascent, the paths were still closed due to too much snow.
On all 4 islands camping is not a problem as long as you get the stakes into the ground...
We really enjoyed hiking the islands!
